The Soweto Protocol

In his composition The Soweto Protocol, David Panzl traces South Africa’s transformation, from the dark shadows of apartheid to the vibrant, life-affirming democracy of today. The work unfolds in this spirit, moving from a polytonal, weighty introduction through music of transformation, and culminating in a festive, hopeful finale. Stylistically, the composition resists clear classification. It weaves together elements of jazz, minimal music, and classical modernism. In this very diversity, it reflects the rich, multicultural heritage of South Africa. The compositional process began in 2022 during a music video production in Johannesburg’s Soweto district, a neighborhood of great significance to Nelson Mandela’s freedom movement. The orchestral version of The Soweto Protocol was premiered on August 17 at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam by the MIAGI Orchestra of South Africa.
The Practice Pad Papers

„The Practice Pad Papers – Revealing anecdotes - and a fake“ is a small expedition into the strange corners of everyday drumming: when jetlag turns waltzes into snare drum solos, a visit to an izakaya becomes a movement mantra, and entire accents vanish into thin air. Three pieces exploring the subtle play between control and release, sound and gesture, seriousness and irony. All pieces can be played both as snare drum solo and with bass drum accompaniment.
Rudimental Short Stories

This collection of nine short pieces is written with the accomplished percussionist in mind, who is in search of challenging solos, short enough to fit in rehearsal breaks, tight practicing schedules or just a busy touring season. All pieces are written in traditional forms for easy memorization but also use a modern writing approach incorporating advanced rudiments and stickings. They can be played either just as a snare drum solo or with optional accompaniment. For performances, I would suggest putting together a suite with a minimum of three contrasting solos.
Rhythmic Morph

As percussionists, we are very fortunate to have plenty of opportunities to learn new instruments, techniques, and skills. This book concentrates on the magic of "morphing" - the skill of gradually altering one rudiment into another. This book is not only dedicated to all percussionists out there, but also to composers who are looking for new inspiration and techniques they can use to write for percussion instruments
